Description
The Lommel Sahara is exceptional, a 350-hectare desert landscape of white sand formed by the emissions from a former zinc factory. To keep further silting in check, forests were planted and the desert could be contained. The lake in the Lommel Sahara is a true oasis, created by sand extraction between 1920 and 1925.
On the edge of the Kempen Plateau lies picturesque Eksel with the beautiful Pijnven forest. This nature reserve covers 1,012 hectares and extends across the territories of Eksel, Lommel, and Overpelt. It was formerly used as a timber extraction area. There is a beautiful museum where you can learn all about the flora and fauna of the Kempen.
