The Lommel Sahara is exceptional, a 350 hectare desert landscape of white sand that was created by exhalation from a former zinc factory. To control further siltation, forests were created and the desert could be tamed. The lake in the Lommel Sahara is a true oasis, created by sand extraction between 1920 and 1925.
On the edge of the Kempen Plateau lies the picturesque Eksel with the beautiful Pijnven domain forest. This nature reserve is 1012 hectares in size and extends over the territory of Eksel, Lommel and Overpelt. In the past it was used as an extraction area for wood. There is a nice museum where you can learn everything related to the flora and fauna of the Kempen.
