How different is Drachten, which emerged from several smaller villages in the seventeenth century. The area was rich in raised bog and this was one of the most important sources of income for the village for a long time. In the fifties of the twentieth century, Drachten grew explosively into a larger town. An important cause was the fact that multinational Philips settled here. The factory, where fourteen employees were allowed to work, was opened in May 1950. The company's plant in Drachten still makes its world-famous shavers here. Based on its size, industry, public facilities and economic value, Drachten can be seen as a fully-fledged city, but the place has never been granted city rights.

Arriving in Drachten, you can see the water tower from afar. The bulky, grey building was built in 1959. The design was made by architect JJM Vegter, who provided the tower with two water reservoirs. In total, the 42-metre-high water tower can store 1,500 cubic metres of water.

At Watersportbedrijf De Lits you will see beautiful boats at anchor. They come and go from the jetties of the cozy marina. You can also view boats for sale or just walk a bit along the quay to get a good feeling of what is going on in the marina.
