Castles and watermills in North Limburg

You can take a varied cycling tour in North Limburg. You drive through a patchwork of nature reserves and charming villages. You also cycle a bit along the Maas and visit the city center of Venlo.

De Borcht Castle
On the way to Baarlo you will pass through some quiet nature reserves, such as the Breukerheide. You also drive through the Kesselse Bergen, which together with the Heldense Bossen form one nature reserve of coniferous forest and heathlands. In Baarlo in Limburg you cycle past the moated De Borcht Castle, which originally dates from 1200. The current building was built in the seventeenth century. Just before that you cycle past the Kasteelmolen, a water mill from 1700 on the Kwistbeek.

After crossing the Maas on a ferry, you drive along the river bank to the historic center of the Hanseatic city of Venlo. You cross the Maas again, where you have a beautiful view. At Grubbenvorst you pass the Slottermolen from the fourteenth century. A little further on you cycle past Huis De Steeg, a mansion from 1750. After your route you can regain your strength at De Turfhoeve.

Yes, Venlo also belonged to the famous Hanseatic League for a while. During the Second World War, Venlo also did not escape bombings and other war violence. Fortunately, part of the historic city center was preserved. If you want to see something of old Venlo, you can cycle to the Markt or the Gasthuisstraat, the most medieval street in the Netherlands.
