Weert, Limburg, The Netherlands
Cycling route: 137851
Provided by: Groots Genieten
This tour through the nice towns of Weert and Nederweert introduces you to a surprising cultural history. You will also pass through the Weerterbos, a beautiful nature reserve.
Weerterbos In Weert you will see the Wilhelmus Huberts, a flour mill from 1904. Further on you will pass the neo-Gothic St. Donatus Chapel from 1872. The Weerterbos is one of the few natural forests in this region. You will pass a lookout tower where you can spot red deer at dusk. Near this lookout tower you will pass the monument for the former border church that stood here in the forest from 1648 to 1712. The forest air makes you feel like having a snack at Huyskamer Daatjeshoeve!
Nederweert Nederweert, a little further away, was separated from Weert in the fourteenth century. You will find a nice atmosphere around the St. Lambertus Church. Back in Weert, near junction 73 on the drawbridge, you will see the only preserved clay pipe oven in Western Europe. You cycle on the Biest, named after a small river that used to flow here. Two castles were built here, the Aldeborch from the thirteenth century was merged into the monastery complex that you can still find here.
Below you will find various suggestions for breaks that you can visit during your route. These are divided into different categories, making it easy for you to choose.
