Eating out in the Eijsden region? On to De Kwizzenjer: an eatery with the quality of a restaurant in Gronsveld. They recently opened an ice cream parlor here: Kwizz-ies. The menu changes four times a year and the dishes are often served with a twist. Just order the risotto, club sandwich or Limburg chicken fillet and taste the difference. Everything is made with really fresh and local ingredients. A nice base for the Meuse valley or the beautiful hilly area around Savelsbos!

Kasteel Schaloen

6305AA Schin op Geul

There was already a castle on this spot in the fourteenth century. That is not the castle that stands today, because it burned out almost completely in 1575. The old castle had a residential tower, which you could access through an extension. After the fire, the castle was repaired and further expanded. The building was then given four storeys, a saddleback roof and a vaulted cellar. The new castle was built with marl, a kind of stone that can be found in this area. You can clearly see this because the castle is so light in color. On the west side is an outer bailey, whose oval shape suggests that it was built in the Middle Ages. The wall anchors on the façade depicting the year 1701 refer to the year of a major restoration. The gatehouse, which has a hipped roof, was renovated in 1718. The tithe barn on the site, dating from 1721, is used as a hotel in 2013.

De Schaloensmolen
