Description

A lovely ride through the polder. The low-lying peat meadow area, crisscrossed with numerous ditches and waterways, is protected from the encroaching water by the Waterlandse Zeedijk (Waterlandse Sea Dike). Low embankments were constructed from the twelfth century onwards and gradually raised. Despite the dike, Waterland remained a wet and marshy area. Trade was primarily conducted at the markets, selling dairy products. Common dialects in Waterland are Volendam and Marken. Along the way, you'll pass through Monnickendam, a pleasant town to cycle through! This city boasts many monuments, the most famous of which is the Speeltoren (Play Tower). This historic town hall tower boasts the oldest hand-playable carillon in the Netherlands. In Purmerend, you can stop at De Jongh Fietsspecialist, where you'll find a nice selection of bicycles and accessories.
