Cycling through Hoogezand and surroundings

While cycling through Groningen, the rural expanse is as striking as nowhere else. It is wonderfully quiet and relaxing to cycle through this province. This special route takes you to the Zuidlaardermeer, among other places.

Kielsterdeep
The route starts in Hoogezand. You cycle along the Kielsterdiep, a seventeenth-century canal that was dug for the reclamation of the surrounding peat. When crossing the Leinewijk in Nieuwe Compagnie, you can still see one of the many former potato factories that once stood in this region on the left. The Zuidlaardermeer is centuries old and was created by an interaction of ebb and flow on the peat in the area. Now it is a beautiful recreation area.

Foxholster Lake
Stop by to enjoy a delicious meal at De Waterjuffers near Vos. This way you get back on the saddle with enough energy when you drive to the Foxholstermeer. This lake is surrounded by the Kropswolder Buitenpolder and Westerbroekstermadepolder. From the path you look out over open water, reed marshes and wet grasslands. A wonderful view to refresh yourself with. Back in Hoogezand you can still admire a few monumental buildings.
