Oostburg, Nieuwvliet and Breskens

In the middle of a marine clay landscape, in a patchwork of polders with an agricultural overtone, you will find the town of Oostburg. Around this are creek areas full of orchids and grasslands that traditionally belong to the noble House of Hemptinne. Oostburg is a modern town and historic buildings can be counted on one hand, but that makes the remaining mansions extra special. Nice sights mainly date from the mid-twentieth century: the Protestant Church and the 55 meter high water tower were built in 1950, the Eligius Church dates from 1949 and the Town Hall was opened in 1957. You have cycled just over twelve kilometers from the parking lot when you pass the Molen van Aalbrechtse (hull/remainder). The round brick mill hull is located in Cadzand. This dates from 1848 and, despite the fact that the mill has been dismantled, you may still recognize the type: the Molen van Aalbrechtse was a ground sailer. This was once a windmill that ground corn. What is special about the mill is that it was equipped with a chain wheel, which was only installed in mills in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen and in East Flanders. Around 1920 this cross gear was replaced by a tail cross gear and since 1931 the mill has been dismantled. Later the hood was also dismantled. In 2013, the striking building serves as a holiday home. A few kilometers away, the ideal location for a break presents itself. Where you can also enjoy yourself is at the Lighthouse of Breskens (New Lock). Named after the hamlet of Nieuwesluis, where the tower has been shining on the Scheldt since 1867, this is the oldest surviving cast-iron lighthouse in the Netherlands. The black and white painted lighthouse was extinguished in 2011, but is still a striking point
