Straight ditches and neat plots characterize the hinterland of the fishing village of Urk. This village is known as the most ecclesiastical in the Netherlands. In the past, Urk was difficult to reach by land, because the Noordoostpolder had not yet been drained. The fact that fishing was the most important economic pillar for the population is evident from both the flag and the coat of arms: both bear a haddock. Agriculture also occurred in the past, but to a lesser extent. The old village center of Urk has been well preserved as a protected village view and is an attraction in itself. The Fisherman's Monument, the lighthouse, the Church on the Sea and the Bethel Church all contribute to the authenticity of Urk. Don't forget to take your binoculars with you when you cycle this route, because you follow the shore of the IJsselmeer for a long way. This way you can look far away over the water and spot beautiful boats and ships, while a soft breeze touches your hair. The Schokland Museum, which is located on one of the last three residential mounds in the polder, deserves extra attention during your cycle tour. The indoor and outdoor exhibition give you a good idea of the geology and archeology in the Noordoostpolder and its history.

At Museum Schokland you can learn more about the history of Schokland. The museum is located on the Middelbuurt, one of the three medieval residential mounds of the former island of Schokland. The permanent exhibition of the museum consists of geological, archaeological and historical objects that give you an idea of the origin of the island of Schokland and its decay, the life of the population in this area and the draining of the polder. The stories come to life through models, historical films and photos. The showpieces of the museum are a number of prehistoric human footprints that are approximately 4,000 years old. These footprints were found near Schokland in 1984. Surrounding the museum is an area of one hectare where the remains of the former settlements can still be admired on the surface. Think of stone water cellars that were used to collect drinking water and a wooden ice runner shed.
