Bruges is the capital and largest city of West Flanders, yet the charming town retains a small, intimate feel. Much of its atmosphere is exuded by the 430-hectare historic center, a UNESCO World Heritage Site as a medieval city. Charming houses, historic streets, and charming squares await discovery. Horses pull covered wagons laden with tourists, their hooves clattering on the cobblestones, and mighty towers atop ancient churches rise majestically into the sky.
The first and only attraction on the route is Male Castle. Built in the 12th century, it served as a fortress for the Counts of Flanders. In 1954, the St. Trudo Abbey established itself here, which also renovated and refurbished the castle. In 2011, the castle was sold to Hein Deprez, the founder of Univeg.
