Bruges is the capital and largest city of West Flanders, but the charming town still feels small-scale. Much of the atmosphere is radiated by the 430-hectare historic centre, which is included on the UNESCO World Heritage List as a medieval city. Cute houses, historic streets and lovely squares are waiting to be discovered. Horses pull covered wagons with tourists, their hooves clattering on the cobblestones and mighty towers on old churches rise majestically into the sky.
The first and only sight on the route is the Male Castle. This castle was built in the twelfth century and served as a fortress for the Counts of Flanders. In 1954, the Sint-Trudo Abbey settled here, which also renovated and refurbished the castle. The castle was sold in 2011 to Hein Deprez, the founder of the company Univeg.
