Description

From Schoondijke you cycle through a beautiful nature reserve, the Nieuwerkerkse Kreek (or Nieuwkerkse Kreek), to the village of Groede. The creek was a side arm of the Nieuwerhavense Gat, which arose at the time of the inundations of 1583. In 1613, the estuary was dammed by the Krabbedijk. To the west, the water splits erratically in two. After cozy Groede you can have lunch at the beautiful Strandpaviljoen Puur. Then discover how nice the town of Breskens is, which originated at the end of the ninth century. In World War II, the Germans built many forts and bunkers around Breskens to strengthen the Atlantic Wall. After the war, fishing and the many beaches ensure a flourishing economy. The Fisheries Museum and the lighthouse are nice to visit.
