Sluis, Zeeland, The Netherlands
Cycling route: 136590
Provided by: Groots Genieten
In West Zeeuws-Vlaanderen you can enjoy a quiet day in the polders. On the coast you can get a breath of fresh air, while the southwest wind gives you a boost.
Nieuwvliet
The route starts at the Luteyn. Only the hull remains of this former flour mill from 1859. A little further on there is a flour mill that still has blades: the Nieuwvliet from 1850. After a while you drive past the Verdronken Zwarte Polder, a nature reserve consisting of dunes and shrubs. Then you cycle for many kilometers along the beach. It is nice to travel for miles here with a view of the North Sea.
Breskens
On the Western Scheldt coast you pass the Nieuwe Sluis: a lighthouse from 1867 that is the oldest existing cast-iron lighthouse in the Netherlands. The last part of the route you drive on quiet roads past grasslands and fields. Just after junction 43 you can have a beautiful view over the Nieuwerkerkse Kreek.
Below you will find various suggestions for breaks that you can visit during your route. These are divided into different categories, making it easy for you to choose.
