Sluis, Zeeland, The Netherlands
Cycling route: 136590
Provided by: Groots Genieten
In West-Zeeuws-Vlaanderen you can enjoy a quiet day in the polders. On the coast you can get a breath of fresh air, while the southwest wind gives you a boost.
The route starts at the Luteyn. Only the hull remains of this former flour mill from 1859. A little further on is a flour mill that still has blades: the Nieuwvliet from 1850. After a while you drive past the Verdronken Zwarte Polder, a nature reserve consisting of dunes and thickets. Then you cycle for many kilometers along the beach. It is nice to make miles here with a view of the North Sea.
On the Westerschelde coast you pass the Nieuwe Sluis: a lighthouse from 1867 that is the oldest existing cast-iron lighthouse in the Netherlands. The last part of the route you drive on quiet roads along grasslands and fields. Just after junction 43 you can look out over the Nieuwerkerkse Kreek.
