Cycle between the woods and over the heathland on the border of Groningen and Drenthe. Bakkeveen is the only green village in Friesland. Many commuters also live in the village of Marum, who mainly work in Groningen. The village is larger than Bakkeveen and has a history of peat extraction. When the peat area was reclaimed and the middle class developed further, other thriving industries arose. The cheese factory that was started in 1918 is an important employer, but Gjaltema's Timmerfabriek, which was originally a family business, is also doing well. Camping de Ikeleane forms the basis for this cycling tour. The campsite is located on an oak avenue, from which the holiday accommodation derives its name.
