Cycling along the left bank of the Maas, you can fully enjoy the unique Maasheggen landscape. The area around Boxmeer was already inhabited in Roman times. The surrounding Land van Cuijk and Gelre still left a strong mark on the area, but over the centuries Boxmeer gradually broke away from the influence of these municipalities: Boxmeer became a free manor. After several sieges and destruction, a noble manor was built on the site of the castle.
