Description

The history of Sint-Truiden is closely linked to that of the abbey of Sint-Truiden, a community of monks founded in 655 that had a lot of influence. The town grew into an economic center, as the discovery of, among other things, a Carolingian coin from 780 shows. In the eleventh century the economy, and with it the abbey, flourished as never before. During this time, Sint-Truiden made the step from a settlement to a fortified city with stone ramparts. The abbots of Sint-Truiden had churches built and had administrative power. In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, fruit growing gave a new impulse to the economy. Fruit cultivation still occupies an important economic position. There are several fruit auctions in the vicinity of the city for this cultivation. In recent decades, Sint-Truiden has also focused on attracting industrial companies.
