Fortress Land Route

Starting point: Muiderslot, Herengracht 1, Muiden. Standing facing junction sign 16, turn right into Amsterdamsestraat, which turns into Sluistraat. Cross the lock (bridge) and follow the signs to Muiderslot. Just before Muiderslot, you will see the Muizenfort on your right. The Muizenfort is the link between the New Dutch Waterline and the Defence Line of Amsterdam. Then cycle to Muiderslot. At Muiderslot, turn left onto Herengracht. You will have to walk a short distance here. After approximately 300 m (opposite no. 33) you will find the departure point of the ferry service to Forteiland Pampus. Cycle back via the lock (bridge) to junction 16 and continue from here towards junctions 17, 18 and 33. Follow Westwalstraat from junction 33 in a south-easterly direction. After approximately 200 m you will be in front of the entrance to the Fortress Museum. From here you cycle back to junction 33, 78, 79. From junction 79 (on the Oud Bussummerweg) follow junction 35. The cycle path ends at right angles to the Amersfoortsestraatweg, follow 35 to the right here. After a few 100 m, turn left over the A1. After the 'ovotonde' go straight on, onto the Huizerweg. At the first roundabout, turn left onto the HALorentzweg and then take the 2nd right (Voormeulenweg) and the first left (Dr. A. Kuijperlaan). The entrance to Fort Werk IV is after 200 m on the left (in front of the Spant theatre!). Then back to junction 35, and continue the route to junctions 34, 49, 48 and 47. From junction 47, cycle towards 46. Fort Uitermeer is located between junctions 47 and 46. Then return to junction 47 and continue the route to 45. Fort Ossenmarkt is located on the edge of the centre of Weesp between junctions 45 and 44. Then continue to 44 and 16. Places visited: Muiden, Muiderberg, Naarden, Bussum, Uitermeer, De Horn and Weesp. Special sights and attractions along the way: This route takes you past 7 forts, all of which are part of the New Dutch Waterline and the Defence Line of Amsterdam. You can visit the first five forts.
