East of Echt, just across the border, you will find the pleasant town of Heinsberg. A visit is definitely worth it, and why not do it by bike? It is wonderful to find your way through the German landscape and see what exactly is so great about cycling through the country of our eastern neighbours. Heinsberg is the westernmost city in Germany and has around 40,000 inhabitants. The city is crossed by the river Worm. This river rises at Aachen and flows into the Roer north of Heinsberg. Coins have been unearthed nearby, which show that Heinsberg is already a centuries old city. Heinsberg was probably founded between 98 and 117.

It is logical that the Second World War plays a major role in the history of Germany and in Heinsberg you will also find a German military cemetery. This is where the dead German fighters who fell in the First and Second World War are buried. Most of the 170 graves contain war dead from World War II, who died in fighting on the border. The area in which Heinsberg was located has been a front line and there was a lot of fighting here. You can also admire the beautiful church in Heinsberg, if you are prepared to make a steep climb to the entrance of the beautiful religious building.
