Description

An area that is perhaps the most special in the Netherlands from a geological point of view is De Meinweg National Park. The terraced landscape was created by shifts in the earth's crust and the abrasive effect of the Meuse in the area. Water still plays an important role in the area: two streams ripple through the terraces, draining the water from the upper plateau and feeding the soil. The result is astonishing: fairytale forests, beautiful heaths, mysterious fens and picturesque stream valleys alternate. What makes De Meinweg extra special is that it is the only place in the Netherlands where the adder still occurs. Keep your eyes open, because you may still see the tracks in the sandy bottom or see the animal itself slipping quietly away. If you want more information about this nature reserve, the De Meinweg Visitor Center, which you will pass during your bike ride, offers a solution. Not only in terms of nature, but also in terms of culture, you will get your money's worth during this cycling tour.

Then you start your journey to the Vlodroppermolen. This water mill was built in 1875 on the Rothenbach and served as a flour mill. The mill was last restored in 1974 after extensive damage during the Second World War. Remarkably, the mill was removed from the monument list in 1985 at the request of the owners. The turbine in the mill is the only one of its kind, which gives the mill a great historical value. The mill now runs on a voluntary basis. You will find the Gitstappermolen on the same river from which the Vlodroppermolen derives its power. This medium-sized water mill was built in 1750 and functioned as a flour mill. The mill was sold in 1987 to the municipality of Vlodrop, which started the restoration in the same year. In 1987, the Friends of the Gitstappermolen Foundation was also established, which aims to manage and operate the mill. The restoration was completed in 1988 and the mill has been running on a voluntary basis ever since. The mill can be visited on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. The last stop is the Hoosden estate, which of the total 55 hectares consists of no less than 44 hectares of forest. The estate dates back to the sixteenth century and was formerly used for small-scale agriculture.

The varied landscape is an excellent habitat for many flora and fauna. In and around the shallow puddles you will find various amphibians and dragonflies, while birds chirp cheerful tunes in the treetops. The connoisseur recognizes the sounds of the beautiful oriole, the drumming of the woodpeckers and the call of tawny owls. If you are really lucky yourself, the rare kingfisher will show itself.
