Halle, Bredevoort and Varsseveld

The village of Varsseveld has only six thousand inhabitants. This place was probably inhabited very early; In the area, finds of reindeer hunters and settlements that traded with the Romans in Roman times were made. The name Wazovelde, the original name of Varsseveld, already appeared in a deed from 823. The Varsseveldse kopps form a small-scale cover sand relief; small mounds rise 1 to 5 meters above the surrounding area. You will see meadows alternately and in lower areas, while fields lie on the tops and deciduous and coniferous forests interrupt the landscape. One of the remnants from the history of the village is the De Engel tower mill, built in 1850. In 1936, the contents of the mill, including grinding stones, sails and upper shaft, were sold because the then owner was due to the economic crisis in the years '30 (literally) saw no more bread in the windmill company. In 1957, the mill hull became a monument and in 1967 the municipality bought the remainder to enable possible restoration of the mill. Ultimately, it was not until 1976 that the mill was festively reopened on May 22. The atmosphere in Bredevoort Boekenstad is very different. The Bredevoort Book City Foundation, which was active from 1993 to 2009, organized a number of large book markets in the historic center of Bredevoort. The foundation was also responsible for the Saturday market and the clearance market organized on Easter Monday. A remnant are the many antique shops and second-hand bookstores where you can browse around.
