Description
Historic dolmens that Drenthe is known for, ancient mills and castles and beautiful nature reserves, you will find it all in the Norg area. Get on your bike and follow this route to see all this beauty with your own eyes.
Dolmens and manors
The starting point of this route is in the esdorpje Norg. Like many other esdorpjes, Norg has a history that goes back to about the Middle Ages. On the outskirts of Norg, you can take a look at the historic windmill De Hoop to immerse yourself in a little history of the village. From here you set course for Hunebed Norg just outside Westervelde. This ancient tomb originally had four capstones, but one of the capstones is missing and one capstone has been damaged. Still, the hunebed is impressive to see. A little further on you will find Tonckensborg, a monumental mansion that has been owned by the Tonckens family for centuries.

In Veenhuizen you can visit the Prison Museum. This museum is located in a restored building from 1823 that was formerly used as a forced asylum. Now you can learn more about everything related to crime and punishment, including the prison village of Veenhuizen and its history.
