Along the Ems and through the Oldambt

Few people know that Delfzijl was once a fortified town. In the bustling harbor, you can still see some remnants of this, such as the monumental Great Water Gate from 1833. This lockable gate is still part of the seawall that protects Delfzijl from high tide. Termunterzijl, on the Eems estuary, is a protected village. In the terp-shaped village of Termunten, you can admire the Ursus Church from 1275. A little later, you'll drive through Oldambt, the well-known agricultural region. Just outside Oostwold, you'll see large farms; the beautiful village itself was once home to farmworkers. The church in Nieuwolda doesn't have a weathercock on its spire, but a mermaid, a reference to the land reclaimed from the sea.
