Description

Few people know that Delfzijl was once a fortified city. In the bustling harbor you can still see some remnants of this, such as the monumental Grote Waterpoort from 1833. The lockable gate is still part of the seawall that protects Delfzijl against high water. Termunterzijl on the Eems estuary enjoys a protected village view. In the wierde village of Termunten you can admire the Ursuskerk from 1275. A little later you drive through the Oldambt, the famous agricultural area. Just outside Oostwold you see capital farms, the farm workers lived in the beautiful village itself. The church in Nieuwolda does not have a weathervane on the spire, but a mermaid as a reference to the land that has been reclaimed from the sea. In Hotel Restaurant de Boegschroef you can relax with a meal and overnight stay.
