Kanne, Kesselt and Genoelselderen

This route takes you along the beautiful valley between the Caestert Plateau and the Muizenberg. Here you will find a small village called Kanne. The area has considerable height differences due to the many plateaus. There is a lot of marlstone in the area. There are a number of marl quarries in the area, which originated around Roman times. Marlstone is characteristic of the area and therefore special lime-loving flora and fauna are present, as is also the case on the limestone grasslands. The town has a number of beautiful sights, such as Château Neercanne, the only terraced castle in the Netherlands. The baroque Holy Sepulcher Chapel, built of marlstone, and the limestone St. Hubertus Church are also beautiful buildings. On the Jeker, the smuggling mills grind the Opkanne mill. You will find the church village of Kesselt on one of the surrounding plateaus. This village is located on a plateau named after the village because of the unique type of clay, the Kesselt Plateau. There has been human habitation in the area for a long time, and an Iron Age settlement was found during excavations. A number of Roman wells from the second century were also found. Along the way you will pass the beautiful Genoelselderen Wine Castle. With 22 hectares of vineyards, this beautiful castle is the largest wine estate in the country.
