Veendam, Groningen, The Netherlands
Cycling route: 135097
Provided by: Groots Genieten
This route takes you through the nature reserves De Strubben and Kniphorstbos, among others. These areas are part of the Drentsche Aa National Park, the only archaeological reserve in the Netherlands. The route starts in the old excavated peat colony of Veendam. The peat colony grew significantly from around 1655 onwards, and peat extraction and peat shipping led to a growth in the agricultural industry. From here, you cycle to the Drentsche Aa National Park, where you'll find several prehistoric burial mounds and dolmens. Dolmen D04 and dolmen D03, together known as the Hunenborg, are nestled between two old farmhouses. Dolmen D08 is in the best condition of all the dolmens in this area.
Below you will find various suggestions for breaks that you can visit during your route. These are divided into different categories, making it easy for you to choose.
