In Veendam and the surrounding area, you'll discover the history of the Groningen peat colonies. For centuries, this was a virtually uninhabited area. In the seventeenth century, peat extraction began on a large scale, resulting in the development of reclamation villages and a new landscape. The first part of the route takes you through the parks and forests that fringe the old peat bogs. At junction 4, you'll pass through Tripscompagnie, where you'll see several characteristic Oldambt farms. Via Muntendam, you'll continue to Veendam. The quays along the Oosterdiep canal are a national conservation area due to their many beautiful historic buildings. In the countryside, you'll also pass through Kiel-Windeweer, a well-preserved example of a characteristic peat colony ribbon village. The route ends at Camping Siblu Meerwijck.
