Beautiful vast nature, interrupted by the occasional forest. The landscape is part of the Natura 2000 area of Weerter- en Budelerbergen and the Ringselven. Explore the gently sloping moors and see a late Bronze Age urn field. The burial mounds contain the remains of a small group of people who inhabited the area between 1100 and 700 BC. Some of the finds from the burial mounds can be seen in the De Tiendschuur museum in Weert. Archaeological research has not detracted from the special cemetery, because after the excavations the burial mounds have been neatly restored.
Below Budel you can also see the Loozerheide. The undeveloped part consists of heath and swamps, between which conifers and sand drifts lie. This small plant grows here, especially at Ringselven, because the area is the largest growing place for gallbladder in the Netherlands. In addition, you will encounter the smallest hedgehog's head, creeping swamp plantain, uneven-leaf pondweed and many other species. Animals that visit the area are many bird species: the black-necked grebe, bittern, forest monkey and china grouse, but there are also amphibians, such as the moor frog and the crested newt.
A nice attraction is the Janzona mill. It is one of three mills that can still be seen in Budel and the Janzona was first mentioned in 1341. In 1921 the mill was destroyed by fire and it was decided not to restore the mill because of competition from the other mills in the village. To prevent decay, the owner runs the mill regularly.
De Sluis, located at the beginning and end of the route, you can end the tour with a drink on your return. You can have a nice meal there, but there is also a Bed & Breakfast, so that you can rest from the effort of the day and leave things behind. Do you want to sleep at home, but you don't feel like going yet? Then the bowling alley is available for a fun game after dinner!
