Your route starts at Buitengoed Fredeshiem. The Eeserveld north of Steenwijk is part of the De Eese estate. A large part of the estate is privately owned. You will find a forest of 440 hectares and 360 hectares of land used for agriculture. There is an old castle on the estate that was probably built at the beginning of the seventeenth century. An old country house and a large barn stand like silent sentinels at the castle. Wilhelminaoord emerged from a mining colony that was founded around 1820 by the Maatschappij van Weldadigheid. It has now been declared a World Heritage Site, a beautiful place to soak up the atmosphere. Further on you will discover the fortified town of Steenwijk. The fifteenth-century church tower is the oldest existing structure in Steenwijk.
