Explore the banks of the IJssel and see the robust floodplains of the IJsseldelta with your own eyes. The Roetwaarden near Den Nul are shaped by sand extraction points, which have already been deeply excavated. A special pioneer vegetation grows on the eastern bank; sturdy plants that manage to survive on poor soils and pave the way for more colorful varieties. On and around the lakes you will find many water birds, which survive on what the water offers them. Birds of prey also know how to find their way, because above the flat land it is easy to recognize and catch prey.
During your bike ride you will pass the fortified house called Groot Hoenlo. This manor house, surrounded by a beautiful estate, is first mentioned in 1233. Next to Groot Hoenlo is Klein Hoenlo, a house that is also known as the widow's house. The beautiful main building has been rebuilt several times over the centuries. Since 2001, the house and accompanying estate have been a protected national monument. Unfortunately, the site is not publicly accessible.
