Description

The centuries-old, picturesque Achel is surrounded by a sea of greenery. The village is best known for the Achelse Kluis; the St. Benedict's Abbey of Achel. More than half of Achel's territory used to consist of wasteland, through which streams flow and conifers grow in dry and moist parts. Fish ponds are wonderfully quiet places among the trees and at the edge of mysterious fens you can let your thoughts wander endlessly. The larger nature reserves are the Achelse Heide and the Beverwijkse Heide, through which the route passes.
Don't be fooled by the name; Instead of vast heathlands, you can expect even more trees here. The nature in the area is beautiful. Beautiful country houses and luxurious villas adorn the area and form gems hidden in the nature of the Lage Kempen. Lovely streams such as the Warmbeek and the Dommel flow through this area. Marshy soils and meadows form rugged, contiguous areas of nature, which alternate with dry sandy soils that are partly planted with forests. You can also cycle a bit through the Kolisbos.
