WML - Western Mergelland

On this route, groundwater is stored deep in the soil under a typical South Limburg landscape with sloped forests, (dry) valleys, standard orchards and rolling fields.

The marl-rich subsoil is porous in many places; the groundwater is therefore sensitive to what happens above ground. That is why the groundwater protection areas here are the largest in all of Limburg. No less than 17% of all Limburg's drinking water is extracted here annually. A large part of South Limburg drinks 'Mergellandwater' from the tap.

Enjoy, but responsibly. That means:

• stay on roads and paths;
• do not damage plants;
• take rubbish with you;
• keep the dog on a leash and pick up the poop.
