Water sources Limburg - Western Mergelland

On this route, groundwater is stored deep in the soil under a typical South Limburg landscape with hillside forests, (dry) valleys, standard orchards and rolling fields.

The marl-rich subsoil is porous in many places; the groundwater is therefore sensitive to what happens above ground. That is why the groundwater protection areas here are the largest in all of Limburg. No less than 17% of all drinking water in Limburg is extracted here every year. A large part of South Limburg drinks'Mergellandwater\\\' from the tap.
