WML - Western Mergelland

Along this route, groundwater is stored deep in the soil beneath a typical South Limburg landscape with hillside forests, (dry) valleys, high-stem orchards, and rolling fields.

The marl-rich subsoil is porous in many places; the groundwater is therefore sensitive to what happens above ground. That is why the groundwater protection areas here are the largest in all of Limburg. No less than 17% of all Limburg's drinking water is extracted here annually. A large part of South Limburg drinks 'Mergelland water' from the tap.
