Your route starts at Papillon Country Resort, close to the border. The German Nordhorn is located in the extreme southwest of Lower Saxony at a strategic point on the Vecht. As a result, Nordhorn was able to build up a good trade network thanks to transport by water. Traditionally, handicrafts, agriculture and trade have been the main economic pillars for Nordhorn. Today, Nordhorn also has a versatile cultural center with a beautiful municipal art gallery where many exhibitions are held every year. The Neuenhaus, founded around 1317, is also located in Lower Saxony. In that year, Count Johannes van Bentheim built a fortress to defend the trade route between Munster and Amsterdam. This castle grew into a city that was officially granted city rights in 1369. In Forst Bentheim you can see traces of red deer, such as abraded tree bark through the antlers.
