Tour of Buikheide and Vessem

Your walk starts at De Biesteuvel Estate. The forests of the Buikheide were the territory of smugglers and peddlers. Farmers tried to earn a living on the sandy soils for centuries. Until the mid-twentieth century, the heath, oak forest, fens and peat areas were untouched here. Now you can find these landscape elements here on a smaller scale. You will also discover the Grootmeer and Kleinmeer, two natural fens in the Buikheide nature reserve. Because of the special flora, the fens are a protected natural monument. With 19 hectares, the Grootmeer is one of the largest in Brabant. There is a lookout tower that offers you a beautiful panorama. There are also beautiful towns here such as Vessem, a quiet village with a large rectangular lawn as the central village square. You will find centuries-old buildings such as the old town hall and the St. Lambertus Church.
