Groote Heide and Meeuwven from Stratum

After a cup of coffee at Het Cruydenhuisch in Stratum, you put on your walking shoes. From here, you walk straight to the vast Groote Heide. Here, you enjoy the vistas and the natural beauty. On the sand ridge, the outlines of former fens are still visible, and smaller fens have been preserved. Afterwards, you discover the woods around the Meeuwven. Although the name suggests otherwise, it has nothing to do with seagulls. It used to be called the Nieuwven, but was corrupted to Meeuwven due to an error by a cartographer during the Napoleonic era. On the banks grows the protected bog myrtle, which was formerly used as a flavoring in beer.
