You first drive through Valkenhorst, which is known for the fish ponds that have been excavated since 1900. Those fish attracted many birds, the most notable of which is the egret. The original production forest is becoming increasingly varied. In Schaft you can see the mill St. Antonius Abt. During the Second World War, part of the mill was used as a field hospital. A botanical garden has been created next to the mill with traditional Kempen farm herbs and vegetables. The stone Liberation Monument Borkel en Schaft is a reminder that British liberators and the population of Valkenswaard came into contact with each other on this spot in 1944.
