Description

You first cycle along the Binnenhaven of Middelburg. After the threat of Vikings, Middelburg developed into a trading center and was the second most important city in the Netherlands at the time of the VOC. Then you cycle to Fort Rammekens, the oldest existing sea fort in Western Europe. Rammekens was built in 1547 to protect and control the busy shipping routes to Antwerp and Middelburg. A lot of natural stone was used because it was more resistant to salt water. Get off and take a look at the beautiful entrance gate. At the Vissershaven in Vlissingen you can stop at the muZEEum, a museum about the sea in beautiful historic buildings. You cycle back via the boulevard and the nice Dishoek.
