The Grootmeer (and the Kleinmeer on the other side) were designated in 1990 as a protected natural monument because of their special plant growth. It is one of the few areas in Europe where the overherb covenant occurs. There is also a population of moor frogs in the fen, a strictly protected animal species under the Flora and Fauna Act.
The fens formed naturally. The Grootmeer measures 19 hectares. The water level can naturally fluctuate strongly.

Farm terrace and visible barn Hoeve De Nachtegaal is located just outside Wintelre, one of the 8 Brabantse Saliences. The farm offers a cozy Brabant countryside atmosphere for young and old.
