The first part of this route takes you through De Maasduinen National Park. You see an extensive heathland and forests. You might come across the sheep herd or Galloway cattle along the way. You cycle to Kalbeck Castle via the nice German town of Goch. The first written mention of this dates from 1326, when Count Reinald II of Gelre lent the house to Dirk Loef III of Cleves. In 1614 it passed into Prussian hands. Currently the castle is privately owned. The fifteenth-century Sankt Cyriakus is a fine example of late Gothic in the Lower Rhine region. The small wooden church already existed here in the 9th century, as part of the medieval farmhouse complex 'Villa Geizefurt' in today's Kalbeck.

The first written mention of Kalbeck Castle dates from 1326, when Count Reinald II of Gelre gave the house to Dirk Loef III of Cleves on loan. The fiefdoms who lived in the castle alternately supported Gelre and Cleves. From 1473 Ambt Goch officially belonged to the Duchy of Cleves. It then passed into Prussian hands in 1614. The lock is currently privately owned.
