  • Cycling route 1267223

The first part of this route takes you through De Maasduinen National Park. You can fully enjoy the extensive heathland and forests here. You might even come across the flock of sheep or Galloway cattle along the way! You cycle to Kalbeck Castle via the nice German town of Goch. The first written mention dates from 1326, when Count Reinald II of Gelre lent the house to Dirk Loef III of Kleef. In 1614 it fell into Prussian hands. Currently it is privately owned. Also stop at the fifteenth-century Sankt Cyriakus, a beautiful example of late Gothic in the Lower Rhine region. There was already a small wooden church here in the 9th century. It was part of the medieval farm complex 'Villa Geizefurt' in present-day Kalbeck.

The first written mention of Kalbeck Castle dates from 1326, when Count Reinald II of Gelre gave the house to Dirk Loef III of Cleves on loan. The fiefdoms who lived in the castle alternately supported Gelre and Cleves. From 1473 Ambt Goch officially belonged to the Duchy of Cleves. It then passed into Prussian hands in 1614. The lock is currently privately owned.
