In the Seneffe area you can enjoy cycling through a peaceful landscape that is intersected by the Charleroi-Brussels canal. This route takes you along this canal that forms a connection between the Scheldt and the Maas. This way you can admire ships while cycling.
The old channel
On the banks of the canal you will find several beautiful sights. For example, take a look at the remains of the old Brussels-Charleroi canal. This canal was commissioned in 1832. South of Ittre the landscape becomes more hilly and the subsoil is rocky. Here the canal gets more bends and locks. The roughest part is between Ronquières and Seneffe. Here the canal bridges a height difference of about 70 meters. The old canal eventually became 75 km long with no less than 57 locks.
The Inclined Plane of Ronquières
If you deviate slightly from this route after crossing the canal, you will discover the Inclined Plane of Ronquières, opened in 1968. This gigantic structure on the Charleroi-Brussels canal stretches over 1432 meters and bridges a height difference of 68 meters. The two barges of the Inclined Plane can each transport a ship of 1350 tons. The entire maneuver takes about 40 minutes.
Observe ships
At the visitor center at the lock, visitors have the chance to observe the entry and exit of the barges from walkways, which are reached by panoramic lifts. However, these gems of industrial heritage are not the only sights along the route. The castle of Seneffe with the Museum of Goldsmithing is also worth a visit. Enough ingredients for a varied day out.
