Cycling through nature at Houthalen-Helchteren

The former mining region in Belgian Limburg is rich in nature. And beautiful bike paths! It is therefore wonderful to cycle around Zonhoven, Houthalen and Helchteren.

Castle brewery
The route starts at Holsteenbron, a beautiful and cozy campsite in the middle of the De Teut nature reserve. From here you quickly enter the cycle path that has been built on a former railway line. You can cycle peacefully for many kilometers on this leafy and car-free path. Just above Helchteren you pass the thirteenth-century Ter Dolen Castle. This was once the summer residence of the abbots of Sint-Truiden Abbey. A brewery has been located in the castle farm since 1994.

The Teut
The second part of your route you cycle through a succession of beautiful nature reserves. For example, you will pass through the Kelchterhoef domain where you will see some old farms. Further on you drive through Ten Haagdoorn and De Teut. Here you will find a variety of heaths, stream valleys, forests and fields. A large flock of sheep crosses the heath almost every day, a scene that gives your trip a nostalgic touch.
