About Wieringen
The former Wadden Island of Wieringen is surrounded by the Wadden Sea, Amstelmeer and the Ijsselmeer. Since the construction of the Afsluitdijk, Wieringen is officially no longer an island. But you still have the island feeling here! Wieringen offers a hilly and characteristic landscape with charming villages such as Den Oever and Hippolytushoef. The rolling landscape was formed in the Ice Age. At various points you have beautiful views over water and land.

Start and end point Den Oever
The cycle route starts and ends at the parking lot in the harbor of Den Oever, a historic fishing port with a still active fishing fleet. The Zee Verse Vismarkt takes place here every Saturday morning, where you can pick out fish yourself or eat some fish.

In the harbor is also the Wieringer Skuutje WR60 from 1840. It is the oldest sailing fishing vessel in the Netherlands. Visitors can also sail along on certain days! A few hundred meters from the harbor is the Wadden Viewpoint , where you have beautiful views over the Wadden Sea.

Tourist office and information center about Vikings
A tourist office is located in Den Oever, but with limited opening hours. In the same building there is also an information center that tells the story about the Vikings and the treasures found in Wieringen.

An alternative to start the route is Restaurant De Zingende Wielen with ample parking and information about the area
(address: Akkerweg 39, Den Oever).

Taste and experience the Wad
Shrimp fishing, mudflat hiking, watching seals or taking round trips. From the harbor of Den Oever there are various options to enjoy the Wadden Sea. Various providers can be found in the port.

The route
The route heads towards Oosterland, where the 12th century Michael's Church dominates the field of view, with charming houses built for the senior staff of the Maatschappij tot Execution van de Zuiderzee Works. One of them is used as a Bed & Breakfast, a unique place to spend the night. A special fact is that the German ex-Crown Prince Wilhelm went into hiding here for a number of years during the First World War.

Via Vatrop , where there is a beautiful vantage point over the Wadden Sea World Heritage Site, you continue cycling to Stroe. The Wieringer Island Museum Jan Lont is located here, where you can experience and taste island life from over a hundred years ago. In the spring,'forgotten\\\' vegetables are grown in the garden, which are put on the menu by local catering establishments.

When you have passed the museum, you can deviate from the route for a while, take the exit towards recreation park Wiringherlant. At the end of the road, against the dike, you will see a periscope . You can see through it for a great view. And now back to the route.

The Heidense Kapel is also located in Stroe . The story goes that Willibrord would have founded a first church around the year 700. During the route you will also come across a nice picking garden, where you can pick your own flowers to take home.

Hippolytushoef is a pleasant village on the route, where the blades of corn mill'De Onderneming' regularly turn at full power. Along the way you will come across different fruit and vegetable stalls, depending on the season.

Westerland is located on the Amstelmeer. The Amstelmeer is very popular among water sports enthusiasts; windsurfing is especially popular there. Kitesurfing is also widely practiced. This produces beautiful pictures. The Lutjestrand is a pleasant swimming beach. There is also catering available, camping Waddenzee is also nearby with an ice cream parlor (with ice cream made on Wieringen).

The continuation of the route is a round of Amstelmeer . Before cycling over the dike, it is recommended to take a look at the Bird Lookout, with beautiful views.  The dike was constructed in 1924 and connected the then island of Wieringen with the mainland. The construction of the Amsteldiep dyke was not without problems: the nature reserve De Verzakking, which is located to the right of the dyke, was created by the slipping of dyke soil. The Amsteldiepdijk thus proved to be an important training ground for the engineers who later built the Afsluitdijk.

During the round, the nice town of Van Ewijcksluis is passed.

From node 90, the polder landscape is introduced.
According to the original plan, the polder would not be constructed until the Afsluitdijk had been completed. But because the Netherlands had a great need for agricultural land, construction was accelerated. On August 21, 1930, the polder dried up. The route passes by farms, where you can buy the freshest fruits and vegetables along the way. A must to visit is Gallery on the Seabed with unique objects, which is located between nodes 90 and 95.

The route goes back to Den Oever, via the Robbenoordbos . Oak, beech, maple, poplar, alder and more. A wonderfully varied forest where there is much to discover. Camping't Bos Roept is located in the middle of the forest and is open all year round.

Via the dike of the IJsselmeer and the Afsluitdijk, the route ends at the parking lot of the harbor of Den Oever. Enjoy a delicious fish on a terrace at the harbor, a nice end to a special tasty route.

Spend the night in Wieringen
Varying from a B & B in a farm, barn or fisherman's house, to sleeping in a place where engineers from the Afsluitdijk used to live. Look at the site under accommodation.
