The Belgian municipality of Mol is the second largest municipality in the province of Antwerp after Antwerp. Of the approximately 114 square kilometers that the municipality covers, more than 70 percent is undeveloped area, although the green environment has to compromise as the city grows. At the beginning of the twentieth century, 4,725 hectares of the municipality were still forested, but by 1995 the nature had shrunk by 1,000 hectares. Near the city, in the green oasis, are the Molse Meren, of which the Buitengoor-Meergoor is part. Nature here is well maintained and has been able to grow considerably, thanks to a special development plan. Water plays a major role in the heathland and swamp area. Acidic water wells up from the soil, while calcareous water flows through canals to the area and makes life possible for special plants and animals in Buitengoor-Meergoor. To ensure that this balance between the water species is maintained, weirs have been repaired or replaced and overgrown fens have been reopened. Fish ladders have been constructed in some places to make it easier for fish to swim upstream and in other places to attract new species. Monotonous pine forests were thinned out and new species were planted. Where possible, the soil was sodded or dug even deeper, so that heather plants can take root. Among other things, the rare gorse, which turns cheerful and bright yellow in the spring, is given the opportunity to develop and heathland is also given the space to expand.
