Rolling heathlands, ponds and fens, drifting sands and forests are what you will encounter on your bike ride through National Park Dwingelderveld, the largest wet heathland in Western Europe. Rainwater does not seep into the ground here, thanks to an impenetrable layer under the soil surface. This is how more than sixty fens and heathland ponds were created, spread across the area. The Dwingeloosche Heide is part of the National Park in Southwest Drenthe. In the summer, bell heather and heather colour the area beautifully pink and purple. Stop off in Dwingeloo for a bite to eat or a drink at Restaurant de Riete. Dwingeloo is one of the best preserved brink villages in the Netherlands! You cycle back via the Oldenhaverveld, named after the village of Oldenhave at your starting point Ruinen. At the brink of the beautiful Ruinen you can see the twelfth-century Mariakerk.
Below you will find various suggestions for breaks that you can visit during your route. These are divided into different categories, making it easy for you to choose.
