You will encounter rolling heathlands, ponds and fens, drifting sandy soils and forests on your bike ride through the Dwingelderveld National Park, the largest wet heathland area in Western Europe. Rainwater does not soak into the ground here, thanks to an impermeable layer beneath the soil surface. More than sixty fens and heathland ponds have been created, spread across the area. The Dwingeloosche Heide is part of the National Park in Southwest Drenthe. In summer, heather and heather color the area beautifully pink and purple. Get off in Dwingeloo for a snack or drink at Restaurant de Riete. Dwingeloo is one of the best preserved green villages in the Netherlands! You cycle back via the Oldenhaverveld, named after the village of Oldenhave at your starting point Ruinen. On the village green of beautiful Ruinen you can see the twelfth-century Mariakerk.
