Winterswijk, Bredevoort and Woold

A small-scale allotment, many ash trees and lovely meandering streams flow through small valleys. The Winterswijk National Landscape, located near the border with Germany, is a breathtaking nature reserve of almost 22,000 hectares. It is characterized by a great variety between fields, meadows, hedgerows and mysterious forests. In the Het Woold nature reserve you will also find peat pits and peat dikes: the remains of a landscape where peat was dug. In the peat pits you can see sundew, lavender heather, small cranberries and peat moss, while the dikes are overgrown with birch and oak trees. Special dragonfly species, such as the black darter and the large emperor dragonfly, as well as butterflies float through the air, while small animals such as the great crested newt, the slow worm and the heath grasshopper make themselves heard. The smooth snake, buzzards and badgers also feel at home in Het Woold. Upon arrival you can park your car for free in the parking lot of Restaurant Berenschot\\\'s Watermolen. Near the restaurant there is an undershot water mill from 1749. The unique facade of this flour mill was designed in Art Deco in the 1920s and it is the only mill with this striking architectural style. The mill was completely restored in 1985 and made ready for milling. In 2013, the mill grinds grain on a voluntary basis and viewing is possible by appointment. When you return to Restaurant Berenschot\\\'s Watermolen, you can end your day with a nice dinner. A cozy establishment has been set up amidst comb wheels and other mill tools. Around the watermill there is a very large terrace on the water, home to the rare kingfisher. The natural surroundings, coupled with the quietly rippling water, make your dinner extra romantic.
