Beautiful avenues, plots that are naturally separated by wooded banks, some small forests here and there, interspersed with beautiful raised moor areas: around Winterswijk you cycle through a fairytale environment. The Winterswijk National Landscape covers approximately 22,000 hectares and consists mainly of beautiful semi-open areas with alternating small plots and large ash trees. Many different lovely pieces of nature and characteristic cultivated landscapes alternate. Picturesque towns and green villages radiate a natural tranquility, with the city of Winterswijk as its beating heart. But the large open quarry at Ratum is also special, because geological deposits from the Tertiary have been found here that were relatively close to the surface. History is still tangible here! You will see an old mill during the tour through the National Landscape. This undershot water mill called Berenschot, which was built in 1749. The unique facade of this flour mill was designed in Art Deco in the 1920s and it is the only mill with this striking architectural style. The mill was completely restored in 1985 and made ready for milling. In 2013, the mill grinds grain on a voluntary basis and viewing is possible by appointment. The mill also has a restaurant where you can enjoy a delicious meal.
