This route takes you along the beautiful coastal region on the North Sea with the beautiful village of Nieuwpoort. This village is best known for the Battle of Nieuwpoort in 1600 between the Republic and the Spanish armies. Yet there was also a lot of fighting here during the First World War. After the Second World War, Nieuwpoort further expanded its port and coastal tourism and quadrupled the area of the village. The harbor area with its beautiful terraces and small marinas is characteristic of Nieuwpoort and water lovers can indulge themselves here. Another historic city is Veurne, which was already a fortified city in the ninth century. Salt has traditionally been extracted here. In the thirteenth century Veurne was very prosperous. The partly Gothic buildings around the Grote Markt date from that time. During the First World War the city was the headquarters of the Belgian army.
