Description
The Hoge Venen nature park is undoubtedly one of the most unspoilt pieces of nature in the Ardennes and the Eifel. This park connects the Belgian East Cantons with the German North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate. With peaks of just under 700 meters, this is the highest area in Belgium. Take a bike ride through this area and discover it for yourself.
High Fens-Eifel Nature Park
The 'German-Belgian High Fens-Eifel Nature Park' is one of the first places in Europe where cross-border nature conservation was done. Part of this park consists of active peat deposits. These deposits act like a saturated sponge, releasing large amounts of water when it rains throughout the year. That water flows to the western watercourses. With the help of reservoirs, the collected water is used for power generation, but it is also used as drinking water.
Castle Raeren
If you have covered 21 km, you will arrive at the historic Burcht Raeren. This moated castle from the 14th century has been used for centuries to make pottery. Until the invention of European porcelain, Raeren stoneware was used in everyday life. In the castle you can visit the pottery museum, which has the status of European heritage.
