Boxtel, Liempde and Best

The beautiful Velder estate is located between Boxtel, Liempde and Best. With a varied flora and fauna, this is one of the most important nature reserves in the Groene Woud National Landscape. The 180 hectare Veldersbos is privately owned, but publicly accessible. The area was probably developed as an estate in the course of the seventeenth century and was previously an uncultivated, waste field. The fact that the area is old can be seen from the thick oak trees, which sometimes have a circumference of three meters. The area is rich in many different plants. The wild medlar and the stem and fluttering elm are rare species, while the felt rose is a new species in Brabant nature. Other characteristic plants are the slender primrose, valley herb, fragrant agrimony, many-flowered Solomon's seal and royal fern. If you cycle through the area around dusk, you will see bats fluttering through the air, but you can also see the beautiful Stag Beetle hovering above the plants. Pine martens, red deer, polecats, foxes and ermines mark their territory and many birds nest in the Veldersbos: the tawny owl, woodcock, hawk, various types of woodpeckers, nightingale, whistler... there seems to be no end to the inhabitants of the trees. The route starts and ends on the edge of Boxtel at Minicamping Den Oorsprong. As soon as you arrive here, the atmosphere of the authentic farm, which is on the National Monuments List, radiates over you. We recommend that you spend the night at the campsite, so that you can also cycle our other route (117830) through the beautiful surroundings.
