Description
When you think of the Veluwe, you probably immediately think of beautiful landscapes. Quiet forests with centuries-old trees, vast heathlands, drifting sand areas, quietly babbling streams and watercourses. You'll find it all there, but there's more. The Veluwe is also bursting with castles, estates and special buildings.
Back to the time of knights and castles
You have barely started your cycling tour when you come across the first sight: Hoekelum Castle. In the past, this estate covered more than 2,000 hectares, but over the years the owners had to give up space to Ede. That city has grown considerably. The castle has been in the possession of one of the oldest noble families in the Netherlands for almost 200 years. A little further along the route you can admire Doorwerth Castle. This moated castle dates from the thirteenth century and the castle was completely restored in 2004. Today there are two museums located in the castle.
Spotting animals
In the Veluwe you will find a wide variety of animals. Various mammals thrive particularly well in the varied landscape of the Veluwe. The largest mammals in the area are red deer and mouflons. These animals usually hide from people, but if you're lucky you might just see a deer disappear between the trees. You will also find various birds and insects in the area.
