When you think of the Veluwe, you probably immediately think of beautiful landscapes. Quiet forests with ancient trees, vast heaths, shifting sand areas, quietly babbling brooks and watercourses. You will find it all, but there is more. The Veluwe is also bursting with castles, estates and special buildings.

Back to the time of knights and castles
You have barely started your bike ride before you come across the first sight: Hoekelum Castle. In the past, this estate was over 2000 hectares in size, but the owners have had to give up space to Ede over the years. That city has grown considerably. The castle has been owned by one of the oldest noble families in the Netherlands for almost 200 years. A bit further on the route you can admire Castle Doorwerth. This moated castle dates back to the thirteenth century and the castle was completely restored in 2004. Today, two museums are located in the castle.

Spotting animals
You will find a wide variety of animals in the Veluwe. Various mammals thrive particularly well in the varied landscape of the Veluwe. The largest mammals in the area are red deer and mouflon. These animals usually hide from humans, but if you're lucky you might just spot a deer disappearing between the trees. You will also find various birds and insects in the area.

Doorwerth Castle is a good example of a moated castle, where the thick outer walls together with the water provide protection. The castle is ideally located: well defensible on a floodplain on the Rhine and strategically on the old main road from Arnhem to Utrecht. A great place for toll collection. Doorwerth Castle was first mentioned in 1260. The predatory practices of lord Berend van Dorenweerd were a thorn in the side of the Count of Gelre and the Bishop of Utrecht. During a siege, the then wooden castle was destroyed and set on fire.
